How To Describe Your Strengths

Strengths

Most people describe their strengths in vague ways. For example, you often hear:

I am:

  • ”good at teamwork.”
  • “organized.”
  • “good communicator.”

However, these statements don’t reveal how you actually work or the impact you create. As a result, your value is harder to see.

Generic strengths sound safe and positive. Nevertheless, they don’t show your behaviour, your contribution, or your identity. In other words, they blend in and you blend in with them.

When your strengths are vague, people can’t understand:

  • how you think
  • how you operate
  • how you create impact
  • why you’re different

Consequently, your strengths become forgettable instead of memorable.

Specific strengths describe your behaviour and your impact clearly. Therefore, they make your value visible, tangible, and easy to remember.

Here are a few examples:

  • “I help teams make decisions faster by presenting information in a clear, engaging way that gets everyone aligned.”
  • “I translate complex ideas into simple language so stakeholders can act quickly.”
  • “I create systems that help teams prioritize and deliver without overwhelm.”

Notably, each of these examples shows how you work and why it matters.

When you articulate what you do well clearly:

  • you communicate your value with confidence
  • you stand out in conversations, interviews, and performance reviews
  • you make aligned career decisions
  • you attract opportunities that fit who you are
  • you stop underselling yourself

Ultimately, being specific helps you build a career that reflects your identity, not just your skill-set.

If you’re unsure what you truly do well, start by noticing where things feel natural and energizing. Additionally, pay attention to moments where people rely on you without hesitation.

Ask yourself:

  • What feels intuitive?
  • What energizes me instead of draining me?
  • What do people consistently come to me for?
  • When do I feel most like myself at work?

Altogether, these moments often reveal your authentic strengths. The ones that shape aligned, sustainable growth.
